Mansa Musa was a Muslim, which is why he made a pilgrimage (or hajj) to Makkah. During this trip, Mansa Musa was said to bring 8,000 enslaved people each carrying a staff of gold, 100 camels, and 24,000 pounds of gold with him! He was also said to spend so much gold in Cairo, Egypt, that the price of gold dropped and didn't go back for 12 years. Mali became well known for its wealth and Sub-Saharan Africa was no longer stereotyped to be tribal.
